In April 1969 work was at last in progress on the South Coast Trunk Road, now known as the M27 and A27.

This view shows the new roundabout and bridge widening at Portsbridge, while the foundations of the new road stretch away eastwards. Between the roadworks and the Highbury estate, a suburban development of the 1930s, are the buildings of Highbury Technical College, opened in 1963.

The multi-storey maths and science block, which you can see here, opened in 1966.
