Thanks to all of you who solved Steve Hansler’s query about the picture of the building displaying the Stand and Deliver mural.
It was indeed a pub – the Coach and Horses at Hilsea, Portsmouth.
Historian Jane Smith, author of The Book of Hilsea – Gateway to Portsmouth, says it was the pub in its second manifestation.
In 1870 the first building was damaged by fire and rebuilt as shown here.
Apparently when the original owner bought the premises from the War Office he was charged what he considered to be such an exorbitant price that he likened it to highway robbery.
