It’s Navy Week 1937 and the crowds have flocked to Portsmouth Dockyard for a behind-the-scenes look at the Royal Navy.

The picture shows that, as ever, the mixture of the old and the new was as fascinating then as now.

Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory forms the perfect backdrop to the submarines in the foreground.

As you can see, long queues had formed to get on board both vessels.
