This is young George Jeffery snapped in 1939 just before the start of the Second World War.

George, of Fitzwygram Crescent, Havant, was a pupil at the Beneficial School, Portsmouth, and the photograph was an official school photograph taken shortly before he was evacuated.

The school, on the corner of Kent Street and Curzon Howe Road, Portsea, was built in 1784 by the Beneficial Society as one of its free schools for boys. It was enlarged in 1836 when a girls’ school was added.
