Pistol-packing sailors

March 1962 and a naval rating signals Halt to more conventional traffic as the Saunders-Roe SRN1 crosses the seafront at Lee-on-the-Solent and returns to HMS Ariel, now the site of the Hovercraft Museum. Roles such as anti-submarine warfare, air-sea rescue and mine countermeasures were foreseen. Pictures courtesy Amberley Publishing

Have your say

I wonder if the navy still trains its sailors to use pistols in case they have to form a boarding or landing party at some time?

I very much doubt it, but in 1939 they did, as can be seen from this picture of ratings training on board the battleship HMS Nelson.

I know when I was in training in 1966 all we had was a truncheon to knock someone over the head with!
