ThiS picture from between the wars shows the premises of the well-known firm of Charpentier & Co in Pembroke Road, Old Portsmouth.

It is 1920 here, but WH Charpentier founded the firm in the 1800s and it became famous for producing a succession of local guide books and directories.

Later the company specialist in maps and local histories and in 1900 was responsible for publishing William George Gates’s Illustrated History of Portsmouth written to celebrate the centenary of The Hampshire Telegraph.

Charpentier’s premises were destroyed in an air raid in 1941 and with them went an irreplaceable collection of illustrations of old Portsmouth.
