It’s hard to believe today, but Portsmouth Dockyard once had 23 miles of railway track running around inside it.

And this map shows that remarkable railway system. Seeing as Portsea Island covers an area of roughly 24 square miles and the Dockyard had 23 miles of track, the figures say it all. And don’t forget there was also the line that dropped down into Gunwharf from the Harbour station, the Hilsea Gas Works system and the Government Sidings also at Hilsea. They were located on the ‘up’ side just past Hilsea station. If you ever drove a train in the Dockyard, please get in touch.
