Regular Remember When contributor Dave Aldous got in touch after this picture of Portsbridge, Hilsea, Portsmouth, appeared last week.

He pointed out the mechanism beneath the bridge on top of the central pier.

Apparently it was hand-winding gear used to raise the bridge to allow taller boats to negotiate their way around Portscreek.

Imagine the roads chaos that would cause today...
