Residents celebrate VJ-Day

The 'mystery' party picture we published in February while below is the same party from a different angle. At the bottom is the VE-Day celebration in Norman Road. Thanks go to Peter Webb for the inset photograph.

Back in February I published this mystery picture from the files of an outdoor party.

The only clues were the word ‘Gosport’ on the back, one legible name – Derek Brown – and the letters VJ.

I thought it unlikely to be a VJ party because of the lack of bunting or Union Flags. I was wrong.

Peter Webb, of Southcroft Road, Gosport, has solved the conundrum.

He confirms it was indeed a VJ party and enclosed this picture taken at the same party but from a different angle and, as you can see, there were flags strung to a gas lamp.

He says it was in Norman Road where he and his sister Marion lived.

And that’s them in the picture – left of centre on the inside of the tables with him holding his sister who is standing on a chair.

He has also come up with some names.

At the back of the picture, standing, are the mayor of Gosport, Alderman Gregson and his wife (the man in the trilby and the woman holding the bouquet); Mrs Carraher and Wally (11th from the left with her son standing on a chair in front of her); immediately to her left is George Webb and to his left, Mrs Bardwell.

The next woman (holding a child) is Mrs Watch and son John.

In front of them on the other side of the table and wearing a party hat is David Shaw.

To the back and two to the right of Mrs Watch is Mary Rocket and Mrs Rocket is three faces further to the right.

The lad in front of her is Kenny Hallet with Mrs Hallet on his left.

The two women next to her are Iris Lynn and Mrs Lynn, while the boy in the dark shirt on the opposite side of the table to them is Derek Brown (the one mentioned in the original picture?).

The man sitting on the far right in what looks like a floral shirt is Cecil Adams.

Two faces on the far right are Cathy Rocket and Ann Bull.

The children seated nearest the camera are (from the left) June Lucas, Anita Jerrard, Brenda Jerrard, Mary Watch and June Shaw.

A few months earlier, Norman Road also held a VE party – and Peter has sent me the picture below with some names.

From the left: Cathy Rocket (seated). Standing, Mrs Rocket (second left), Mary Rocket (fourth left), Mrs Lynn (fifth left), Wilf Treloar (eighth left with open white shirt), next to him is Mrs Carraher and Wally, and next to her is Mrs Bardwell.

Next to her is Mrs Shaw with children June and David standing in front of her,.

Three along from her, the woman in the dark cardigan and white blouse is Mrs Bull.

In front of her the child is Brenda Jerrard. Sitting on the bench at the front are Mrs Watch and John (second from the left), and Mrs Webb and Marion (fourth from the left).
