On this day in 1774 urgent orders were received in Portsmouth for the immediate despatch of four Royal Navy ships.

They were sent to Boston where, three months earlier, revolting Americans had thrown three shiploads of tea into Boston Harbour – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
