About six years before this photograph was taken in the mid-1960s, designer Christopher Cockerell was turning a drawing board dream into reality with his invention of the hovercraft, a revolutionary concept in passenger travel.

The Suffolk boatbuilder took out 56 patents on the design and the first experimental hovercraft crossed the English Channel in 1959.
