In today’s list of Portsmouth men killed in the First World War we see John Herbert Webb.
He is listed as a canteen assistant but on his war record we have him down as a servant. He is recorded on the casualty list of HMS Hampshire as an Admiralty civilian. Was he perhaps a member of the Naafi staff? John was the son of John and Matilda Webb. He was married to Alice and lived at 228, Westfield Road, Southsea. He died, aged 25, when HMS Hampshire was sunk on June 5, 1916. I have never heard of the rank of servant in the navy before and if he was not a member of the Naafi perhaps some of you former naval men out there can tell me more?
