Hands up who can pinpoint the location in the photograph above?
Yes, it is in the centre of Portsmouth, but I bet many of you will have forgotten how this corner of the city looked 40-odd years ago.
The block of offices was CJB House which was in Buckingham Street, Landport and is now Chandos Rise flats.
It is overlooking the car park that replaced streets of terraced houses which were bombed in the Second World War.
Perhaps you might be able to get your bearings when I tell you that car park is now home to Tesco in Crasswell Street with the multi-storey car park on top of it.
All today’s pictures come courtesy of Philip Pyke of Westwood Road, Hilsea, who took them in February 1976.
His other photos were taken from the roof of CJB House and include views looking towards St Mary’s Church at Fratton; Zurich House under construction in Stanhope Road and another looking over Commercial Road towards the Tricorn, before the Cascades shopping mall was built.
Readers might recall the story and picture here last week about the missing information board about Milton Locks, Milton, Portsmouth, and a plea for its return.
Good news. Dave Moore, a member and trustee of Langstone Harbour Fishermen’s Association, got in touch to say he has it and is refurbishing it. ‘It will be back in position very soon,’ he says.
