What were you doing 46 years ago?

It was 1970 and suddenly the sixties were no longer swinging.

Ted Heath replaced Harold Wilson as prime minister in June; the half-crown coin ceased to be legal tender, and the National Westminster Bank began trading after the merger of the National Provincial and Westminster banks.

The age of majority was reduced from 21 to 18 for most legal purposes, a Boeing 747 landed at Heathrow becoming the first jumbo jet to land in Britain and Mick Jagger was fined £200 for possessing cannabis.

Some of these events might trigger personal memories of significant events in your life.

And that’s what I’m after.

I’m about to embark on an additional weekly nostalgia project for The News and I need your help.

We shall kick off by looking back at October 1970 and week by week, year by year, work our way forward to 2006.

So what were you doing in October 1970?

Did you have an autumn wedding? Did you give birth that month to a baby now in middle age?

You might well have been caught in a photograph wearing ridiculously wide flares?

Perhaps there are pictures of you riding your Chopper bike, having fun at a birthday party or dancing dodgily in one of those new-fangled discotheque places!

Each week a key section of our new supplement will be devoted to your stories and pictures of the relevant month being featured.

So, as always, please send them to me at the e-mail and postal addresses at the top and bottom of this page.

And to help jog your memories here are some pictures of 1970 Portsmouth as it finally began to be rebuilt, 25 years after the end of the Second World War.
