Now here is a rarity – a picture from August 1912 of a submarine float in a carnival.

The procession is heading south along Fratton Road, Portsmouth, having just passed St Mary’s Church.

And below is a close-up of the boat complete with helmeted divers and the horse and cart pulling it through the streets of Portsmouth.

The photographs were taken by legendary Southsea lensman Stephen Cribb and were posted on the Memories of Bygone Portsmouth Facebook page by Cribb collector and authority George Malcolmson.

Of the shot below George says: This float was so accurate I have seen it copied and cropped in contemporary books and captioned as a real submarine.’
