The recent picture of the 1960 Northsea Swimming Club water polo team brought back many memories for Eddie Wallace.

He was the goalkeeper for the Portsmouth City Police water polo team and he sends this picture of the polo and swimming team taken at the Bournemouth Police Gala in 1956. Eddie is second from the left in the back row.

Competing against Portsmouth were the Bournemouth borough force, Hampshire and Isle of Wight joint force, and Southampton Borough Police.

He says one of the forwards was PC John Tambling, who also featured in the Northsea picture. ‘He met with a tragic accident on Ladies Mile, Southsea, while serving in the traffic department which left him permanently disabled.’

Eddie, of Revenge Close, Milton, Portsmouth, adds: ‘Whenever we played other forces and if we were short of a swimmer we often co-opted Alf Griffin or ex-Guardsman Charlie Hubbard, who ran a wet fish shop in Arundel Street.’
