The Criterion cinema in Forton Road, Gosport, was built on the site of a former Admiralty waterworks in 1912.

One of the films shown on the opening night of May 8 was a documentary called With Our King and Queen in India.

The Criterion survived two world wars and was still attracting good audiences into the 1960s and 70s, but it succumbed, like so many others, to the popularity of bingo.
