Have your say

I first published the picture on the right on June 2 and after visiting the location several times to take a ‘then and now’ shot I gave up as I just could not place it.

I received a reply from David Pink who told me roughly where it was. Then I visited Queen Elizabeth Country Park where I spoke to Tim Speller and he put me right.

NOW: The pub was where the black car is

NOW: The pub was where the black car is

For a start, I thought the photograph was looking south with Butser Hill to the rear.

In fact it is looking north with the old Coach and Horses on the east side of the A3. In the modern picture this is the exact location give or take a few yards.

Since the pub’s days the road has been raised several feet and the hillside to the rear planted with thousands of trees. The pub would have been where the black car is in the centre of the ’now’ photo.

When the original picture was taken it was possible to pull up at the pub for a pint. Now vehicles zoom past at 70mph.
