How many of you recognise this rough old lane? Perhaps the building to the right of the road in the mid-distance might give the game away.

The road became the A27, is now the A259, and we’re at the re-established Hermitage area of Emsworth.

Thanks to Doug Barlow, of Main Road, The Hermitage, for this evocative picture.

He says: ‘The turning to the right is Slipper Lane leading to the old Slipper mill on Slipper Pond. The houses facing the camera are still there as are the cottages on the road’s right, one of which is occupied by my neighbour David Hitchman who has the original photo and has pursued the return of The Hermitage hamlet.

‘Beyond the cottage is the old bakery and The Sussex Brewery which is very much still in use.’
