Last week’s photograph of the Pompey Championship-winning side which I called ’The Boys of ’48’ attracted the attention of Ged Kelly from Toronto, Canada, a former Portsmouth man.

He sent me a photograph of the real ‘boys’ of 1948 – the Pompey Boys who won the Hampshire Schools FA Pickford Shield beating Aldershot 8-1 at Fratton Park.

The match took place in May, 1948, and Ged was in the team. It also included Billy Albury, who in later life turned out for the full professional side and who went on to manage Waterlooville.

I know this as he gave me a trial and I also used to deliver his Football Mail on Saturday evenings.
