Ray Rowsell got in touch after seeing a recent picture here of speed trials at the Glory Hole, Eastney, in the 1950s. This is another from John Apps.

Ray says: ‘I first remember these from about 1955/56 when I was cycling near Eastern Road and could see and hear this event taking place across the water.

‘I didn’t know how to get there, but followed my nose and eventually found it. The paddock for the cars was on derelict land as you turned in from Henderson Road to the road that ran around the shore towards the Hayling Ferry. Most of this road is gone or no longer accessible. The trials were held on this road.

‘I don’t know if this was responsible for my lifelong interest in motor sport, but it was the first live event I saw.’
