Golden wedding couple Albert and Marie Carter swapped partners to find true love.

Mrs Carter’s best friend was going out with Mr Carter when the couple first met.

But Mrs Carter fell for Mr Carter straight away and asked her friend to exchange him for her boyfriend.

The couple, pictured, of Woodfield Avenue, Farlington, were both Portsmouth born and bred. They were married at the city’s register office.

Mr Carter, 70, worked as a nurseryman while Mrs Carter, 68, was a shop assistant.

During the Second World War Mr Carter served in France as a lance corporal in the Royal Engineers. He was invalided home after the truck he was driving set off a land mine.

The couple later had six children – born girl, boy, girl, boy, girl and boy.
