NOSTALGIA WITH BOB HIND: Curse of the telegram: Dear Mrs Hall – your son is dead

Have your say

Philip Pyke knew this would turn out to be an historic photograph when it appeared in The News in 1972. How right he was.

The photo shows the redevelopment of the civic heart of Portsmouth in an area which today would be largely unrecognisable if it were not for the Guildhall.

Philip, of Westwood Road, Hilsea, Portsmouth, says: ‘I bought it from The News shop in Lake Road and I think I paid £1 for it.’

The Civic Offices, the home of Portsmouth City Council, are yet to be built and the renaming of the western section of Commercial Road as Guildhall Walk would not happen for some time.
