On the evening of October 23,1970 two tankers collided six miles south of the Isle of Wight. 13 crewmen died.

Flames from the oil tanker Pacific Glory could be seen from Portsdown Hill

Have your say

Here we see trolleybus No 201 heading north having negotiated Fratton Bridge in the mid-1950s, complete with its famous overhead junction of trolley wires. It was amazing to see, believe me.

The woman to the right is crossing Lucknow Street and all the buildings seen were then demolished to make way for the new British Legion building.

Notice the superb lamp standard and lamp above the bus.

Of course, they didn’t give out much light but what an atmosphere there was in the city on a misty damp evening in winter.

Mmm, I can breathe it in even now!
