Two weeks ago I wrote of the tunnels under Portsdown Hill used as shelters during the Second World War.

This photograph shows how claustrophobic and damp it must have been and the close-knit bunks to be used by residents who escaped to the tunnels every evening.

On The News website Hansom_2 said he remembered hundreds of people carrying bedding on their backs or in prams streaming across Portsbridge in the late afternoon/early evening on their way to the tunnels at the height of the blitz. Seems like another world don’t you think?
