Dave Allen has often appeared in these columns in his guise as the chronicler of pop music in Portsmouth or as Hampshire’s cricket historian.
But two photographs of football teams, which appeared here a week ago, transported him back to his career as a teacher and his first job at Portchester Community School from 1975-1980.
Last week’s pictures showed Portchester Community Association’s under-12 side and an adult team from Funtley, near Fareham.
While Dave was teaching at Portchester he ran the football and cricket teams and he says that one ‘very talented’ soccer team stood out – the under 13s who won their league and cup double in 1977.
And many of them appeared in that community association picture.
Dave says: ‘I’m pretty sure the correct date would be 1974-1976, while the other picture (Funtley) must be a bit later because it includes one man Ian Payne (seated, front second left) who is also in the earlier photo (back row, centre).
‘When my boys won their medals we held a presentation evening. Most of them were Pompey fans but a few supported Saints so we found the perfect presenter, Bobby Stokes who was born in Pompey and played for both teams.’
Dave’s picture shows Stokes presenting to captain Tim Dix who still plays cricket for Fareham.
The full line-up is (l to r): S Doswell, M Hennessy, I Perkins, C Elliman, M Exelby, A Pilbury, D Bridger, T Dix, C Bray, (Dave Allen, behind) I Payne, Bobby Stokes, P Barringer, P Doney, D Jackson, P Hinks, R Hooper, J Hobbs
Dave adds: ‘They were not only very good at football and cricket but a delightful group to teach and work with.’
