Now here’s a stirring sight which we might just see in Portsmouth Harbour before the end of the decade.

Two Royal Navy aircraft carriers alongside each other.

Should we eventually get both HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales (and David Cameron has now promised both) it will, however, be a rare occasion when both are tied up in the naval base.

But we live in hope and it would certainly draw the crowds.

If it happens, one thing is guaranteed – the backdrop will certainly not be as exotic as the one pictured on the right.

Former sailors will recognise it instantly as Malta’s Grand Harbour.

Nearest the camera is HMS Eagle and on the far side is HMS Victorious.

The picture comes from Robin Kay’s collection and dates from the late 1950s.
