Winnie, the pet monkey of the Portsmouth-based destroyer HMS Velox, underwent an operation for an abscess on the head.

The animal was an outpatient for 10 days being brought back each day to the hospital by his sailor keeper.

In this picture, believed to have been taken shortly before the First World War, the sailor is seen dressing Winnie after his bath.

Velox was sunk by a mine near the Nab Tower in 1915.
