Readers’ recent photographs of various royal visits to Portsmouth made Simon Hart raid his albums.
And he discovered these pictures, taken on his old point-and-shoot 110 film camera, of an annual event in Portsmouth.
Each summer virtually the entire family would descend on the city to board the Royal Yacht Britannia in her home base. This continued until, amid huge controversy, she was decommissioned 14 years ago.
Simon, of Hamburg House, Cross Street, Portsea, said: ‘Members of the royal family would travel to the harbour station and then ride in a car through Victory gate in the naval base to board the yacht for their annual holiday in Scotland.
‘This event often took place in August. I was in the crowd during the late 1980s and early 1990s and keen to use by pocket-sized 110 camera.
‘It was very much a happy event waving to the royal family as their summer holidays commenced,’ he added.
