This is an advert from 1958, not all that long ago, when you could buy a house like that shown here for £2.75 a week in modern money.

As long as you could be thrifty and save the £95 required for the deposit you were on your way.

Mind you, that is equivalent to just over £2,000 in today’s money. The average labourer earned £12 a week.
