Clare, of Westfield Road, Southsea, says: ‘I think it was held at Easter-time.

‘Anyone could enter a team to race ‘‘baby’’ and pram over a course on Southsea Common.’

She adds: ‘In addition to the obstacle course with a water jump and compulsory drinking of beer from a potty, there were sprints, a yard of ale competition, concours d’elegance and a long-distance push from Brighton to Southsea by a couple of chaps on roller skates.’
