Massage is a fantastic way to unwind and forget the stresses of every day life. But there is nothing quite as relaxing as a foot massage. Here we tell you the best way to give one.
Why does a foot massage feel so good?Reflexologists believe that the feet hold the key to every part of the body and by manipulating different parts of the foot it relieves stresses and pain in other parts of the body.
Massage relea
ses endorphins which act as natural pain killers. Feet take a big hit day after day carrying your entire body weight so it feels good to give them a good rub now and then.

Where do I start?
Ask the person you are massaging to wash their feet and soak for about 10 minutes.
To further enhance the experience add a few drops of essential oil to the water. Make sure feet are completely dry – including in between toes – before starting the massage.

Should I use cream, oil or just my bare hands?
It is best to use a lubricant because the hand slides more easily over the feet. Again, use a nice-smelling essential oil.

Where should I start massaging?
Begin by stroking the top of the foot. Move in the direction of toe to ankle. Then, continue by stroking the sole of the foot, gently at first, then increase the pressure.

Should I knead the foot or is it too delicate?
No, go for it. A bit of extra pressure feels good. Knead the sole by holding the foot with one hand and making a fist with the other, using moderate pressure into the sole. Give enough attention to the arch.

What about the toes? How should I massage them? Slip your fingers between each of the toes about five times.

What should I do to finish?
Wipe off any excess cream or oil with a soft towel. Slip into thick socks to retain the moisture.

What the expert says:
Katy Logan, a beauty therapist at Beauty Solutions in Fareham, said: 'Stroking the feet stimulates the blood vessels and promotes gentle heat. Hold the foot in your hands and begin to massage the top surface of the foot. Use your thumbs in a slow, firm stroking motion, starting at the toes and moving up to the ankle. Once you have reached the ankle follow the same line back to the toes. Make sure you apply lighter pressure towards the toes than the ankle. Repeat this five times and then perform the same technique
