May your Christmas be white

Pouilly Fuiss 2011, Nicolas Potel

Pouilly Fuiss 2011, Nicolas Potel

Christmas white wines need to have enough character to go throughout the whole meal if needed, from an aperitif to the turkey and all the trimmings.

So here are few suggestions, starting with one of the bargains of the month. Stonehaven Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Western Cape (The Co-op at £5.99 on offer from £7.99) made by the brilliant Cape Point Vineyards, is really fresh, zesty and green tinged, without all the overpowering tropical fruits you get from some New Zealand wines.

Staying with the Co-op, Sancerre 2011, Domaine Raimbault (£9.99 on offer from £12.99) is lovely and good value, with minerals, grassy notes and a nice length.

For a great all-rounder Tesco Finest ‘Tingelup’ Riesling 2011, Great Southern (Tesco £9.99) is one of the best-value wines and full of limey fruit. Wonderfully refreshing.

TOP TIPPLE: Pouilly Fuissé 2011, Nicolas Potel

Nicolas Potel is one of the rising stars of Burgundy, and this is a real treat for Christmas. This unoaked wine has peaches, apples, pears and a little spice on the nose, followed by quite a broad palate. It’s delicious and has a lot of character.

Waitrose £10.99, on offer from £14.99 until January 2
