A week of Christmas, rugby, and a bacon roll or two

Jane McLaren, operations and client manager at Key Recruitment writes about her past seven days.

Monday morning: I delivered an induction programme to two new recruitment consultants who joined this week. It is important all employees know how the company works and how they can make a difference. Everyone is encouraged to be vocal with their ideas. We have 27 members of staff so we need to ensure existing staff are kept informed.

On Tuesday I visited four clients to review and audit our services. This is an innovative service we offer to all clients. We provide bespoke data such as attendance figures, KPIs and HR initiatives.

Breakfast meeting at the 10th Hole on Wednesday. Each week I take three members of staff out. This enables integration of Portsmouth and Southampton staff and it encourages them to vocalise their ideas and feedback.

Arranged the staff Christmas party!

Thursday we had a training day in Portsmouth. The training included a DVD of England's 2003 Rugby World Cup success. Maverick decisions, acronyms, single-mindedness, focus on ideas, ambitions and change were all styles of Clive Woodward and led to that victory. Everyone learns from training!

Lunch with a client at Fat Olives – great company, food and ambience. Some people think going out for meals is a great perk. It is, but in informal surroundings the client can discuss our service and their expectations in greater detail.

Undertook some committee work for the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development.

It's Friday and I'm in the Southampton office. Most Fridays all the staff get treated to breakfast baps and coffee, it's what we call 'Fat Boy Fridays'! This started the day nicely! The day was calling clients, arranging visits and doing administration. In the afternoon, all the team had a 'wash-up' meeting, to discuss the events, successes and possibilities of the week.

It has been a great week at Key Recruitment. The weather could have been better, but the team were, as usual, excellent! Driving home I think how lucky I am to do a job I enjoy so much, in a great company, with brilliant people and to top it all – it's the weekend!
