A great start to retirement

Choosing to retire from the job she loved was a bittersweet decision for Sheila Taylor.

Her work as a home assistant brought her into contact with lots of elderly people who really relied on her help.

During the course of her working day she'd fetch and carry their shopping and make sure they were all right.

Sometimes hers was the only friendly face they'd see and Sheila loved that aspect of her work.

But over the years Sheila, 61, found the work was making her back ache and in the end it got too much for her.

When she decided to retire she began to look forward to relaxing a bit more and enjoying herself.

Sheila's three daughters wanted their mum to have something nice to look forward to and that's where we came in.

They told us their mum would love to have a makeover and we arranged for it to happen on the day after she retired.

Sheila, who has seven grandchildren, was thrilled when she discovered what her girls had done and was happy to celebrate the first day of her retirement with a pamper session.

Here's how Sheila from Portsea, Portsmouth, got on.

Hair

First stop was to see the team at Hair OTT in Portsmouth.

Senior designer Nicky Clark was on hand to take charge of creating Sheila's new look and the pair began by chatting about her lifestyle.

Nicky wanted to find out how much time Sheila had in the morning to do her hair and how she liked it to look before deciding on a style.

As Sheila's hair was quite short on top and her face shape is square, Nicky wanted to work on softening the look.

Nicky worked through the hair from the bottom, blending it as she went. She softened the hair around Sheila's face and chopped some length from the bottom. Nicky swept the hair around Sheila's face at an angle so it would complement her cheekbones.

For the colour, Nicky wanted to concentrate on making Sheila's hair look natural. As she has a warm skin tone, Nicky began by adding some warm blonde foils through the front of the hair. A medium brunette was added to give gloss and a deeper colour.

Nicky completed the look using Paul Mitchell styling products including a thickening lotion and shine spray.

Make-up

Beauty therapist and make-up artist Cherri Wilson stopped by the salon to show Sheila a new make-up look.

Sheila's not used to wearing much make-up but Cherri was on hand to explain what would suit her.

Cherri used Thalgo's nutrition moisturising cream followed by a honey-coloured foundation to give an even coverage.

Translucent powder was used to set the powder and bronzing cream was added to the cheeks. Cherri used highlighter to emphasise Sheila's cheekbones.

An ivory base was used across the eyelids followed by a caramel shimmer. Gold eyeshadow was used at the corners of the inner eye which picked out the gold flecks in Sheila's eyes.

Dark brown eyeliner was applied along with brown mascara and fuschia lipliner and lipgloss added the finishing touches.

Clothes

Sheila popped into Evans where she picked out this eye-catching outfit. Fashionable fuschia was the order of the day for Sheila who wore this pretty chiffon blouse, 30; smart black trousers, 18; hot pink wedge shoes, 22; and pretty beaded bracelet, 8.

Verdict?

Sheila says: 'I'm so pleased. It's so different from what my hair was like before but I'm pleased. It's been a very enjoyable day and Nicky has been great.

I left it up to her really and she was full of opinions.

It's been a very good experience and I'm very happy.'
