Back in the 30s they knew a thing or two about design and style.

So at a house for sale in East Cosham even the front door has an interesting archway design.

It catches the eye as soon as you arrive, but you may be surprised to find that the same archway style catches your eye again in the main bathroom, where it shapes the recess that houses the sunken bath that sits alongside a raised plinth.

Charlton House, on the corner of Havant Road and Lodge Avenue, also has a contemporary feel to many of the rooms thanks to the light colours and plentiful windows.

But you are still aware of the elegant age when the house was built thanks to the wood panelling, briquette fireplace and curved hearth in the entrance hall.

‘Houses like this are always popular with buyers, they remind many from the baby boomer generation of what the homes of the prosperous professional classes looked like when they were growing up,’ explains Colin Shairp, of Fine and Country Southern Hampshire.

‘The combination of decorative gable ends, double height bay windows, often with tile hanging between the ground and first floors, and pebble dash or painted render at first floor level still makes them highly distinctive.

‘Charlton House is no exception on this score and it is really set off by the mature gardens and mature trees that help ensure privacy.’

The property has two main reception rooms, the drawing room with a square bay and the dining room with a bow bay.

The kitchen makes every concession possible to modernity with plentiful base and wall storage, a breakfast bar, integrated appliances, and a five ring free standing range cooker with double ovens and a stylish chrome and gloss black finish.

The balustrade staircase rises via a mezzanine landing to the first floor, where there are five bedrooms, the majority with built-in storage. In addition to the luxury bathroom, there’s also a separate shower room.

The principal garden is to the front, with stairs rising to a balustrade terrace with a door to the dining room.

There’s a further curved brick patio, a garden to the side and a terrace at the rear as well as a large garage and ample off-road parking.

Guide price is £590,000.
