Daring BMX feats, high flying mountain bike stunts and show-stopping street dance routines will all be on display at Gunwharf Quays this weekend.
The leisure destination’s Extreme Festival has become a regular fixture in the calendars of adrenalin junkies, urban dance enthusiasts and families looking for a fun free day out.
From 11am to 4pm tomorrow and Sunday, Gunwharf’s Central Square will be transformed into a hub of urban activity.
Biking talent on display will include former World BMX freestyle champion, Effraim Catlow from Southsea, and local mountain bike duo Zero Gravity.
Says Effraim: ‘I started BMX training when I was 10.
‘After visiting the Southsea skatepark, I was hooked.
‘It’s amazing to be taking part in the Extreme event.
‘BMX flatland riding is a brilliant social sport and I can’t wait to create a buzz amongst the crowd.’
Zero Gravity, meanwhile, are one of the most accomplished stunt teams in the UK.
Founded by British freestyle champion Chris Doney from Wickham and Andy Ponting from Havant, Zero Gravity will be showing their awe-inspiring mountain bike stunts, including death defying somersaults and back flips.
New to the festival this year, and in partnership with Portsmouth Festivities, is internationally-acclaimed hip hop dance group, Breakin’ Convention.
The group is based at Sadler’s Wells in London, the world’s leading theatre for international dance.
They will perform their show-stopping routines and invite the public to learn new moves with free workshops tomorrow.
Also, performing throughout the weekend will be Portsmouth street dance crews Most Wanted and Streetforce DC.
Ian Hart, Gunwharf’s centre director, says: ‘Our Extreme event is always a big hit with visitors and we’re very excited to welcome such world class acts for the first time.
‘We welcome families to come and watch the fantastic displays for themselves and make a day of it by taking advantage of exclusive discounts and offers from our leisure and outlet retailing.’
