Brittany Ferries has announced a record number of passengers travelling from Portsmouth for the second year in a row.

The company said between June and August 828,492 came through Portsmouth International Port crossing to France and Spain.

Destinations include Le Havre, Caen, Cherbourg and St Malo in France, and Bilbao and Santander in Spain.

70% of the company’s passengers travel from Portsmouth.

Mike Bevens, Brittany Ferries Group commercial director, said: ‘Passenger numbers are up and we’re no longer the best kept secret on the western channel.

‘Today, we are the most attractive alternative to no-frills airlines and the most convenient choice when travelling to continental Europe by car.’

There has also been a 4.4% increase in the number of vehicles carried on Brittany routes to France and Spain.

Portsmouth International Port ferry port manager Kalvin Baugh said: ‘These impressive statistics show that more and more passengers are enjoying the convenience of a holiday that starts from Portsmouth International Port.

‘Brittany Ferries has been proactively marketing the benefits of travelling to France and Spain from Britain’s best connected port.

‘With easy access from London, the south east and the Midlands there is no better choice for holidaymakers looking for a hassle free crossing to the continent.’
