Bronte and Bollywood combined
Brontë goes to Bollywood next week in a new musical at the Nuffield Theatre, Southampton.
The scorched desert landscape of Rajasthan is the setting for British Asian company Tamasha's interpretation of Wuthering Heights - Emily Bront's classic tale of passion, jealousy and revenge.
Shakuntala is the beautiful and headstrong daughter of merchant Singh. Krishan is the wild street urchin Singh adopts.
The unlikely siblings' adolescent play soon turns into tumultuous passion, but can their love withstand Indian society's taboos and hierarchies, not to mention Shakuntala's yearning for the riches and status that only Vijay can provide?
Tamasha's previous work includes A Fine Balance, Strictly Dandia and the groundbreaking East Is East.
The company is influenced by Indian cinema – from the brooding black-and-white epics of the 1950s to colourful contemporary blockbusters.
Wuthering Heights runs until(7.30pm).
Tickets: (023) 8067 1771 or nuffieldtheatre.co.uk.
