Students proved they have what it takes to be successful business leaders when they entered a competition to design a sustainable tourist resort in the Seychelles – in just four hours.
More than 60 14 to 16-year-olds from Cowplain Community, Oaklands Catholic and Park Community schools, as well as Havant Academy and Horndean Technology College, wowed a Dragons’ Den-style panel of judges at the Havant Federation of Schools’ enterprise challenge.
But after a close contest Emily Dennett, Rebecca Robinson, Josh Simmons, George Webb and James Wimberley from Cowplain Community School were crowned overall winning team, with Horndean as runners-up.
The winning team presented a design that involved using sea water to flush toilets, collecting rainfall to drink and using sailing boats for transportation, rather than planes.
But it was their unique ideas of creating a tranquil retreat for couples, families and groups, as well as an underwater area for visitors to experience life under the ocean without damaging coral reefs, that won the day.
Emily says: ‘There were so many great presentations, it was a shock that we won.
‘I have learned how hard it is to work to a deadline and really enjoyed the question-and-answer sessions with the judges.’
Becky adds: ‘It was nice working with students from other classes.’
The event was sponsored by Sunsail who will treat the winners to a sailing trip around the Solent.
Nicki Craven, business and enterprise co-ordinator at Cowplain, organised the day and says: ‘Events such as this enable students from schools throughout the borough to work together.’
Judges included Julie Jones of Hydra Technologies, Tina Webb of Havant-based marketing company Tri-Synergy and Vanessa Cooter, lecturer in travel and tourism at Highbury College.
