Cinema scoop spells a treat for film fans

Portsmouth has been chosen to show a top Hollywood film 10 days before its London premiere.

The film, called Sleuth, stars Jude Law and Michael Caine.

It will be shown at a special advanced screening at a red-carpet event at No.6 Boatyard, the independent cinema in Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, on Thursday November 8.

It's part of a special black tie gala evening to launch the city's annual film festival, a 10-day event that showcases local talent and highlights all aspects of film, from blockbusters to audio visual art.

According to the film's distributors, Paramount UIP, Sleuth's London premiere will take place on Sunday, November 18, but Portsmouth film fans can see it first.

The owner of No. 6, Steve Metcalfe, said: 'We're very proud to be hosting Sleuth.

'It's rare to screen a major film so far in advance of its release date.

'It shows the distributors think Portsmouth film festival is worth promoting.'

The event is being organised by Portsmouth Screen, a group of film professionals and enthusiasts from our area.

Roy Hanney, senior lecturer in media production at University College Chichester and one of Portsmouth Screen's founder members, said: 'Our aim is to bring together anyone interested or involved in film-making to share contacts, experiences and best practice.

'By putting on events such as the forthcoming festival, we are raising awareness of successful projects, work in progress and the great many creative and cultural activities there are in our area.'

The festival, called Portsmouth Screen 2007, will include workshops, talks and exhibits.

Other films being shown at No.6 cinema include the wartime thriller The Counterfeiters that caused a sensation at the Edinburgh Film Festival and A Mighty Heart starring Angelina Jolie.

There will also be other screenings of independent short films from directing talent across the south and a night of debut films from schools, colleges and youth groups at the central library in Guildhall Square.

On Thursday November 8, guests will arrive at No.6 Cinema for a black tie reception which will include food and drink from top Southsea restaurant 8 King's Road.

There is a limited number of tickets available for this glamorous event, so film enthusiasts are being urged to contact the box office as soon as possible, on 07815 650753.
