Clive Tilley
Clive Tilley is the ommercial director of Wightlink Limited, Portsmouth.
Job description: Responsible for communication and building awareness of the Wightlink brand. Wightlink operates a round-the-clock service between the English mainland and the Isle of Wight. We run every day of the year on three routes across the Solent and sail up to 230 times a day.
It's an exciting and very busy time at the moment as we are undertaking a 57m investment programme involving upgrades to all three of our routes – Portsmouth to Fishbourne, Portsmouth to Ryde and Lymington to Yarmouth – involving new and more efficient vessels.
How long have you worked for Wightlink? Eighteen months, having worked other transport operations.
What's your background?
After doing a degree in economics at Aberystwyth University I took a sales and marketing role at Spillers Foods. I then moved to Trebor, and continued my consumer goods career at Allied Lyons ending up as sales and marketing director in the drinks division. I then took the leap into transport in 1993 when I went to work for Avis Car Rentals, and since then I have also worked at National Express, within the rail division and Manchester Airport. So I have really covered the full range of travelling methods!
What do you like best and least about your job?
This is a challenging job as we are providing a service that really does matter to people – they rely on us to get them back and forwards to the island. I relish making positive changes – so finding out what the customers want and trying to put them into effect.
There are of course downsides to any job. Not only is the current economic climate proving very challenging but the climate of a different sort of course could have been kinder to us this summer. Still even in the rain the island can be a great place to visit!
