Curtain falls on Rock Challenge show

The curtain has come down on the south coast's biggest talent competition, in which thousands of youngsters did their schools proud.

Up to 4,000 pupils from across the south east took part in the finals of Rock Challenge held at Portsmouth Guildhall over three nights.

All had to perform an eight-minute dance and drama

piece set to music, with many colourful costumes and stages on show. Petersfield School walked away with the top prize on the opening night, while Purbrook Park School in Waterlooville finished as runners-up the following evening.

The final night saw South Downs College in Waterlooville scoop the Best Choreography award.

Rock Challenge – first set up in Portsmouth in 1996 – encourages children to have fun without the need for alcohol or drugs.

Show promoter Stuart McGregor said: 'Obviously finals week for us is incredibly important and the young people who have showcased their talents from all over the country have been fantastic.

'This being the biggest week in Rock Challenge history, we are really proud that we have been able to hold the events – it says a great deal for the reputation of the area that 4,000 young people have travelled down.'
