Job title and company: Managing director, The Listening Company, Portsmouth
Job description: My role is varied and covers the responsibility of our 900-plus staff and multiple clients who all have different demands of me. The key areas revolve around the strategic development of our business.
This includes new business acquisition and company profit and loss, through to consultancy and account development via our value-added services such as video mail, SMS, web chat as well as the telephone. Currently, I am working with local organisations to drive various training initiatives that focus on contact centre skills.
How long have you been doing it?
I have been working in contact centres for nearly 20 years. I started work on the phone in a sales environment and soon progressed to managing my own team.
From there, I relished the opportunity to develop within a fast-growing organisation and quickly progressed to managing large teams through to running the successful fast growing dynamic business.
How did you get into it and why?
I started working in contact centres after graduating from university with an arts degree, and found I could utilise my creative flair and strong leadership within a business environment.
What do you enjoy about it and not like about it?
I enjoy working in a dynamic ever-changing environment, not one day is ever the same, and we need to make considered decisions quickly for our clients. If I could change one thing it would be the perception of our industry as a stop-gap job rather than a career of choice.
What would be your idea of a perfect day?
A great question as my role is so varied; however, creating more jobs in the local community has to be high on the list.
