Dr Jay Kettle-Williams

Dr Jay Kettle-Williams is the owner of Polyglot Solutions, Southsea.

Position: Owner, Polyglot Solutions, Southsea

What is your role? I'm a sole trader working as a consultant in three main areas: UKTI's Export Communications Review Service to help exporting SMEs in international communication and overseas trade.

Also, the design and delivery of training cross-cultural and language training programmes for all manner of companies ranging from micro, midi, maxi SMEs to the larger corporates and blue chip companies.

I am called upon as an expert witness for linguistic issues. Also, I am the president of the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Chamber of Commerce.

How did you get into your vocation? I've always been involved in languages, particularly Spanish.

I started language at school in London, a boys' grammar school, St Olave's.

There was strong emphasis on the sciences but the school also taught Latin, Greek, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian and Swahili.

When engaged as an academic at Portsmouth Polytechnic, I initiated the Language Centre. Afterwards, I was seconded to the DTI with an 8m budget to replicate my Portsmouth model 20 times across the country.

After that baptism by fire into the commercial world, I wasn't going to return to teaching Spanish language, literature, dialectology and philology!

Pet loves: I am fascinated by all types of human communication.

Pet hates: Lack of self-discipline in people's behaviour; Lack of people's concern for others – at whatever level in society, either in a company or in public life.
