Eliza Doolittle
Eliza Doolittle pre-empted her appearance at HMV's Next Big Thing Festival with a warm-up at the Cellars in Eastney.
Promoted as one of 2010's breakthrough artists, Eliza is already creating a stir and last night's performance was no exception.
Local girl Natalie Hall offered support with her band's debut, but inexperience showed through with a nervous vocal that was overwhelmed by an excitable and energetic group performance. However, it will only take a few tweaks to make these guys well worth a watch in the near future.
Leigh Mary Stokes proved once again why she is a favourite of the Portsmouth music scene. With a strong vocal reminiscent of late 90s Dubstar with a late 'noughties' Adele twist, this was a refreshing and captivating experience that begs to be repeated.
Doolittle taps into the current revival of the chanteuse, with a performance that blends the best of The Noisettes sound with a wry, whimsical and cheeky outlook on modern life that is reminiscent of Lily Allen, but a damned sight smarter.
Watch out for the much anticipated new single Skinny Genes, released later this week.
