England striker set for £3m transfer battle

Former Leicester City, Liverpool, Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic striker Emile Heskey is set to become a transfer target of Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill.

The Aston Villa boss has been alerted by Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan's admission that they will have to consider selling the England striker next month - to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

O'Neill said: "We will be looking to do something in January in terms of bringing someone in and that is what happens when players run into the last six months of their contract.

"They decide what is going to happen. I am sure that Emile Heskey will not be short of offers." Whelan wants up to 4m for Heskey, who is also fancied by Manchester City and Newcastle..
