The first skatepark Fareham has ever had is set to open tomorrow with a day of fun, competitions and music.

The new £160,000 facility has just been built next to Fareham Leisure Centre in Park Lane.

Skateboarder Jak Tonge is helping to organise the launch event, called the Skate Park Jam.

Jak, who helped design the skatepark, says it will be a great day for young skateboarders as well as families who just want to watch.

Jak says: ‘It should be an exciting day.

‘Fareham has never had an official skatepark before so there will be a lot of people really looking forward to it.

‘People will be able to bring their picnics along to the park and do whatever they usually do, and then watch the competitions at the skatepark.’

Jack says skaters will be impressed with the range of features the park has.

He says: ‘There are ramps and ledges and a jump box.

‘What we’ve got for our money is really quite remarkable. It’s going to be really fun and a good chance for people to learn something new.’

A coaching and tuition session will take place from 11am to midday, and there will be equipment including skateboards and helmets available to use for free. There will be a BMX riders competition at 12.15pm.

At 1pm Fareham’s mayor, Councillor Mike Ford will officially open the skatepark.

At 1.30pm there will be a scooter competition, followed by an in-line skating competition at 2.15pm.

There will be a skateboarding competition at 2.30pm and prizes will be presented at 3.15pm.

For each style of riding there will be an under 16s and an over 16s category.

Jak says: ‘There will be prizes for all the youngsters that get involved in the competition.

‘We’ve got a few sponsors who have donated prizes for the event, so there will be some skateboarding equipment, clothing and so on.’

Food and drink will be available from the leisure centre.

Music will be provided by DJ Zork from Gosport, MC Adam Macavoy and the group Murky Drum and Bass.

Jak says: ‘There’ll be live music happening all day.’
