A majestic duo to match the sun

ALISTAIR GIBSON: Some of today’s wines have serious balancing issues

Have your say

Sadly we are not blessed with a wide choice of independent merchants in this area.

Although not independent, the opening of a new Majestic Wine House at Havant this weekend is a bonus if you are interested in wine. With the demise of Oddbins, Majestic is almost the last man standing and although its selection has got a little more conservative over the years, there are great wines to be found.

Caixas Godello 2012, Monterrei (Majestic £9.99 or £7.99 if you buy two) is another super fresh dry white from north-west Spain with pear, citrus and minerals which make a great partner to some really fresh seafood. With the sun shining AIX Rosé 2012 Coteaux d’Aix en Provence (Majestic £19.99 – magnum) is the perfect garden accessory, fresh with soft red summer fruits and a dry finish.

Porcupine Ridge Syrah Viognier 2011, Swartland

Made by the highly-acclaimed Boekenhoutskloof estate using fruit from the Swartland region, which is rapidly turning into the Cape’s hottest ticket, this is brilliant barbecue wine. Deep-coloured with violets, smoky black fruits and a certain earthiness, it’s fantastic value while on offer and cries out for beef or lamb straight from the coals.

Majestic £8.99 or two for £6.99 each.
