For me chenin blanc has to find some space on the Christmas table. It’s versatile and can work as an aperitif as well as with the turkey if there’s a little oak in the background.

Raats Granite Blocks Chenin Blanc 2013, Coast Region (Majestic £11.49 buy 2 for £8.61) is made from older vines. There is ripe pear, melon and a touch of spice, followed by a pleasing green apple acidity and great length. A lovely example of South African chenin blanc which is guaranteed to be a real crowd-pleaser on the big day.

For those of you needing a Marlborough sauvignon blanc, Jackson Estate ‘Stich’ Sauvignon Banc 2013 (Waitrose £13.29 on offer £9.95 until December 31) is really well balanced with zesty acidity, gooseberries and a touch of passion fruit. If you are having seafood to start, this will work beautifully.

For the traditionalists among you, Tesco Finest Chablis Grand Cuvee 2013 (£9.99, on offer at £7.99 from December 15) is terrific value, a very well-made basic Chablis which will work very well with salmon and may even carry on to the turkey.

It’s very elegant with crisp, apple-led fruit, a touch of minerals and a satisfying, long finish.
